Magnetic vortices in nanodisks reveal information

Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and Forschungszentrum J├╝lich together with a colleague at the French CNRS in Strasbourg have found a new way to electrically read out the orientation of magnetic vortices in nanodisks. Their method relies on measuring characteristic microwaves emanating from the vortices. Knowledge about these signals could be used for constructing extremely small components for novel memory technology or wireless data transmission. The results are published in Nature Communications. —> Read More Here

India to launch fourth navigation satellite March 9

Bangalore, India (IANS) Mar 03, 2015

India will move closer to its own satellite navigation system with the launch of its fourth satellite tentatively slated for March 9, a senior official of the Indian space agency said on Monday.

“The launch is tentatively planned for March 9 evening around 6.35 p.m. However final green signal for the launch will be given days ahead of the satellite launch,” M.Y.S. Prasad, director, Satish —> Read More Here

Huge “Y” in Venus atmosphere due to a wave distorted by wind

Granada, Spain (SPX) Mar 03, 2015

Venus is covered by a dense layer of clouds which does not display any noteworthy characteristic. However, when looked in the ultraviolet wavelength, it presents conspicuous dark structures. The biggest one, which practically covers the entire planet, is shaped like a “Y” and it has been a mystery since its discovery more than half a century ago.

Recently, a study led by astronomers from t —> Read More Here

Debris Fills Orbit as US Satellite Explodes

Washington DC (Sputnik) Mar 03, 2015

The US Navy confirmed an unexplainable satellite explosion filled Earth’s orbit with potentially dangerous debris.

The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Flight 13 (DMSP-F13) experienced “a sudden temperature spike” on February 3, but only on February 26 the loss of the apparatus was officially confirmed.

The explosion has filled the planet’s orbit with 43 pieces of space debri —> Read More Here

Could Ionized Gas Do A Better Job of Sterilizing Spacecraft

Moffet Field CA (SPX) Mar 03, 2015

Earth’s microbes are a hardy bunch. They can survive in extreme environments, such as inside hot springs at the bottom of the ocean. Some have even remained alive despite being exposed to the ultraviolet and ionizing radiation, extreme low temperatures, and vacuum of space.

This is why planetary protection advocates are so concerned about our exploration of other planets in the Solar Syste —> Read More Here

New Flight Software to Fix Memory Issues is Onboard Rover

Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 03, 2015

Opportunity is on the west rim of Endeavour Crater near “Marathon Valley,” a putative location for abundant clay minerals now only about 492 feet (150 meters) away.

The project is preparing to mask off the troubled Bank 7 sector of the Flash file system with a new version of the flight software (FSW). The preparations for the FSW load and build were to begin with the 3-sol plan on Sol 3938 —> Read More Here

India to Launch Fourth Navigation Satellite for Communications Security

New Delhi, India (Sputnik) Mar 03, 2015

India will launch the fourth of seven satellites in its navigation system in a move to join the ranks of space-faring nations, a senior official in the Indian Space Agency said on Monday.

The country now is three satellites away from having its own satellite navigation system (IRNSS) which will help ensure the security of its communications. Countries with similar systems include the Unite —> Read More Here

How Would The World Change If We Found Extraterrestrial Life

Moffet Field CA (SPX) Mar 03, 2015

In 1938, Orson Welles narrated a radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds” as a series of simulated radio bulletins of what was happening in real time as Martians arrived on our home planet. The broadcast is widely remembered for creating public panic, although to what extent is hotly debated today.

Still, the incident serves as an illustration of what could happen when the first life beyond —> Read More Here
