Baby Panda Dies At National Zoo
Well, this is heartbreaking: One of two baby pandas born on Saturday at the National Zoo has died.
The cub — the smaller of the twins — died on Wednesday shortly after 2 p.m., the zoo said in a news statement on Wednesday.
The larger cub “appears to be strong, robust, behaving normally and is with mother Mei Xiang,” the statement said.
The smaller cub was being cared for by zoo staff. The zoo had planned to swap out the babies every four hours, so Mei could be with one of them at a time.
But the mother panda “has not been a willing participant in the panda team’s efforts,” and refused to relinquish the larger of the babies, the zoo said in a statement on Tuesday.
The zoo provided no further information.
A video of the pandas’ recent birth can be seen below.
A press conference on the cub’s death is scheduled for 4 p.m. We will update this piece with any new information.
